Concept Presentation page

Our first draft that we presented in class was taking different aspects of the human perception into account. For example the colour or the laws of gestalt (same colour=grouped together. Same texture=grouped together etc.), 3d vs. 2d to differentiate between the two types of icons; shopping vs. museums (Goldstein, 2008).

We wanted to make the icons for shopping stand out (Ware, 2008, p.33), so we choose a different shape for them, three dimensional instead of the icons for museums, which were two dimensional. Apart from their shape, their size also differed from the other icons, the shopping icons were bigger. We tried to render the Delft city centre area topographically by means of lines and to include key landmarks that enable visitors to relate to the reality of what lay above them. These key landmarks were the old and the new church because their towers are most of the times visible while walking through the city. We kept them very symbolic but tried to translate their shape into the icons in order to keep them distinguishable for the tourists. The way of using lines and to keep the map schematic instead of topographic accuracy was chosen because of the scenario the map would be presented in. We wanted to provide the tourists with less information as necessary to not overwhelm them with information. The human brain is capable with bringing the information given together with the real environment that they see. As Ware states, ‘new meaning is constructed when patterns already stored within the brain are combined with patterns constructed from external information’ (2008, p.165). This is an automatic process and justifies the use of a simplified, schematic map in which not all streets and corners are integrated.

The poster looks very clean, this can be positive and negative. The positive thing is that the tourist can not be confused about a lot of streets and non understandable signsn. The negative part is that it is maybe not all clear for the user that this is the city centre of Delft. Maybe it can help if you use recognizalble points, like waters or names of the main streets? The use of the icons is very clear.
